Primate Protection and Research Modernization Act of 2018
US Senator Cory Booker (D-NJ) has introduced the Primate Protection and Research Modernization Act, which seeks to “eliminate unethical and unnecessary testing on primates”. This bill would ensure that primates would only be used in research when there was no other viable alternative and would set minimum care requirements for primates’ physical and mental well-being. The text of the bill states “nonhuman primates are highly intelligent and social animals, and most research laboratory environments do not meet the complex physical, social, and psychological needs of nonhuman primates”. While testing through primate models is still required in ensure safety, this bill would help ensure that these primates were well cared for when no other testing option exists.
Full text of the bill can be found here.
